This organic spiral piece is made of about 30 different types of beads in shades of gold, yellow, brown, red, pink, purple, rust, and more. The overall effect is reminiscent of a gnarly old tree in which a Magpie might create a nest. A close look reveals a glimmer of shiny treasures hidden within like the jewels a magpie might steal and hide within. The center beaded crystals also represent these lovely gifts we might find within a magpie’s nest.
Rather than a typical Cellini spiral, usually woven with a different color for each bead size, a rich mix of beads are used for each size. There are four bead mixes, each with its own character, plus a crystal mix. The blend of colors makes the necklace take on a different character depending upon the color you wear it with. It looks particularly fabulous with shades of gold, berry, orange and purple, but hot pink is a great look, too. There are matte and shiny beads, metallic and frosted beads, round and shaped beads. The clasp is a beautiful Swarovski crystal volcano button echoing the colors in the necklace.
"The Gift of the Magpie" measures a bit over 21 inches in length, and about 1 3/8 inches at the widest point (center). There are thousands of beads in this necklace, added one at a time with needle and thread. Each bead is passed through 2-3 times by nylon thread, an exacting and time-consuming process. This necklace is given extra support by beading wire strung through the middle of the necklace and through the clasp. With proper care, this piece should last for generations.
