Beluga whales explore the polar waters of the far north, often blending in with the blue-white icebergs. They have sometimes been nicknamed "sea canaries" because of their large repertoire of calls and whistles. While adults are unmistakeable in their white colouring, juveniles are actually dark brown, slate blue or pinkish grey, until about five or six years of age. Belugas are the only whale that does not have fused neck vertebrae, and can turn its head to look around at its surroundings.
