A book with an absolutely gorgeous cover! The Romance of Modern Electricity explains electricity and how it can be used in “non-technical language”. It was written by Charles R. Gibson, an associate of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, and contains a selection of diagrams and black and white photographs.

Title: The Romance of Modern Electricity- Describing in Non-Technical Language What Is Known About Electricity And Many Of Its Interesting Applications
Author: Charles R. Gibson
Publisher: Seeley and Co. Limited.
Publication Year: 1906
Pages: 347 plus adverts for other books by the same publisher.
Size: 14.2 cm x 19.9 cm

This book has blue boards with some mottled fade marks. The front and spine are embellished with gorgeous gilt, red and white illustrations and lettering. The gilt is in very good condition and contrasts beautifully with the blue.

The pages are clean, as are the illustrations and photographs. The spine of the book is in good condition, one page with a photograph however has come loose. The back of the book contains an index followed by information about other books by the publisher. The contents page shows that there are thirty three chapters, with topics ranging from “What is magnetism” to “Electricity’s relation to heat”.

The first page contains a handwritten but damaged dedication to a previous owner, "Edward *damaged text* Smith". The date of “Christmas Term 1905” can be seen. The publishing date of the book is 1906, either this was a misprint by the publisher, or it may be that the book was purchased and given later in 1906 after Christmas 1905. Two pages later is another dedication; "Edward Smith from Miss Scolt".

This book would make a lovely and unusual gift for the man in your life!
