The body has a mottled matte finish and the body has a deco-like squared off streamlining. We think the coolest thing about this typewriter is the logo; the world and wings Underwood logo is rarely found.
Based on the body shape and key type, we date this typewriter in the 1950s. We were unable to find the exact year using the serial number on the typewriter, which is P34358. Though the typewriter is labeled "Universal" on the paper tray, the Universal models were made earlier and this is just part of Underwood's habit of re-using old names. Because of it's close resemblance to the Leader models in 1953 and 1954, we're going to guess that this typewriter was made during this period.
The backspace, "y", and "l" keys stick. Some of the other keys, most notably the "t", will stick or slow if one is typing too quickly. All other keys are working correctly.
There are few other noticeable malfunctions with this typewriter. The ribbon does not move while typing, so the user will have to manually turn the ribbon when the section of ribbon being used fades. The bell no longer dings at the end of each line. The body has some paint wear. The included case is difficult to close and is damaged.
