THE STORY OF CLOISONNE
Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. From a base shape, metal strips are added to create compartments. Cut gemstones, glass, and enamel is then inlaid into the compartments to give the piece life and beauty.
Cloisonné was first used in the ancient Near East for jewelry items such as rings and later in Ancient Egypt in jewelry for Pharaohs. From here the technique spread around the globe, being used heavily during the Byzantine Empire for religious pieces. In the 13th Century it made its way to China, where the cloisonné style really took hold and became iconic for the Chinese culture, being used in everything from necklaces to plates and incense burners.
Today, cloisonné’s unique look is one everyone recognizes but little know by name. Despite this, there's no denying its unique appeal and allure. Own your own cloisonné piece today and wear it proudly knowing the rich history it came from.
