When we go to the Oregon Coast to collect driftwood, 65 miles from where we live, we eat and wander through Old Town Bandon, our favorite spot! There is one shop that we frequent because they carry Oregon Myrtlewood that is cut & milled by an old timer who lives in Bandon. These are his smaller scrap pieces and they are like finding gold. That is where we found this amazing piece of Myrtlewood burl.
I love this box because it reminds me of a gnarly hike up a beautiful hillside with her smooth and rough patches cascading across the lid. The cut sides of this box are an awesome display of the amazing work of hungry fungi called spaulting. Spaulting occurs while the wood is exposed to the elements and the fungi leave these unique pen-and-ink patterns surrounding the feathery texture of the grain. Let your imagination be inspired!
We finish all of our woodworking with Clapham's Beeswax Salad Bowl Finish and we NEVER use stains. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions. If you would like to see more of our rattles, boxes, and spirit shakers please enter our Etsy shop at:
The first four photos are of this box from different angles. The final photo is of an ancient Oregon-Myrtlewood trunk, burly and content living her life along the Coquille River in SW Oregon.
