Creating these delicious hearts was a lengthy labor of love:
-PMC is rolled into a sheet, then the hearts are cut from the clay.
-After drying the hearts are carefully sanded smooth.
-They go into a kiln for 2 hours at 1650 degrees. The organic clay binder burns away and the silver particles sinter together, leaving pure silver hearts.
-Next comes burnishing and polishing to bring out the gleaming shine.
-On to the enameling! Now I scrub each heart to make sure they're free of any dust or oils.
-One layer at a time the glass 'dust'(looks like sugar at this point) is applied smoothly and carefully to the hearts.
-They're carefully placed into the hot and waiting kiln and fired for about 1 1/2 minutes at around 1450 degrees. (It's more art than science:)
-They emerge when the enamel is smooth and 'glassy', and cool slowly.
-Repeat! A total of 7 separate applications of enamel and firings take place to complete each earring.
Behold the result! Handcrafted with love and meticulous attention to every detail. Too much work and time for a pair of earrings? I don't think so:)
The hearts are about 7/8" x 7/8". From the top of the earwire, the total length is about 1 1/2". Sterling silver earwires.
