This is a large handmade 2-drawer chest made from a single very special 9-foot plank of Hickory I found standing, lonesome, in a corner of my favorite lumber supplier’s warehouse. It was a pretty raggedy inch-thick board with splits, knots, worm holes, bark, rotted places and a substantial spalted section. Spalting is the result of a fungal infestation from the wood being left in the damp. I suspect this board was cut from a deadfall log that had laid in the forest dirt for a long time before it was finally harvested.
The board spoke to me, figuratively. In spalted lumber, a fungus seeps into the wood grain and deposits lines of various colors which highlight the grain pattern. This board had a section of spalted, twisted, grain and it said, “I want to be a manly chest!” So I paid the man and took it home. I cut it up in my garage into pieces small enough to get in my basement shop.
The general dimensions of the chest are 18-in wide x 10-inches tall by 12-inches deep. The two drawers are 1¼-inches deep. I made certain the drawers were deep enough to accommodate a variety of different handguns. I made both the lift handles and drawer pulls from contrasting Black Walnut.
The drawers feature removable Ash egg-crate dividers; 20 compartments per drawer. If you want to store your handguns, just lift out the egg-crate. The drawer bodies are Beech and the drawer bottoms and the invisible horizontal body dividers are Baltic Birch plywood.
I’ve incorporated a mortise lock on the lid, and my signature drop-pin drawer lock – with the pin installed the drawers are immovable.
I decided that a manly chest such as this needed something manly inside the top bay – so I built a removable tool caddy with a Walnut handle. The handle collapses, but lifts to remove the caddy. The caddy is captured in Walnut rails so it doesn’t move around in place. The caddy is also made from the same Old Hickory, and has box-joint corners. The drawers and removable tool caddy are all lined with manly green felt (removable).
If you use this chest for your handguns, I would suggest using the removable tool caddy for your gun cleaning supplies.
Many of my chests are outfitted as jewelry chests, with the option for using the chest for a different purpose, such as a tool chest. This chest, from the git-go, wanted to be something else – like a tool chest, or a storage chest for handguns. It’s big, it’s heavy, it’s solid, it’s loaded with character and it’s made from Old Hickory! What could be more manly than that?
You can, of course, use it for jewelry – ‘specially if you have really heavy, manly, jewelry that wants to sit proudly in an Old Hickory box!
I joined Facebook during the building of this chest, and I created a photo essay on Facebook showing the process of building the chest, from beginning to end. I will include a photo CD with your purchase so you’ll have a record of the process from the raw board to the finished chest. I’ll also e-mail you a link to access the Facebook photo essay. If you want to see the photos before buying, let me know – I’ll e-mail you the link.
I finished the wood with several sanded-in coats of Danish oil mixed with an Early American stain, followed by coats of hand-rubbed polyurethane varnish. I experimented to get a finish that would really “pop” the spalted Old Hickory grain and I think I hit it right. My daughter says the photos don’t really do the grain justice – it is hard to photograph. Don’t have much natural sunlight in Ohio in January.
Words can’t really describe the spalted grain pattern on the top of this chest. The grain is a sort of Rorschach Test – you see whatever your imagination concurs up. To me, the top pattern looks like a waterfall of lava, emptying into a fiery pool. But that’s just me.
This is a handmade, heirloom quality, heavy Old Hickory chest. It is truly one of a kind. Use it for a lifetime and pass Old Hickory on to a son or grandson.
