Traditional kokeshi dolls, originally created as a souvenir for Japanese tourists visiting hot spring resorts in the Edo period, have somewhat of a controversial reputation. Some believed they were used as memorial objects for lost children of miscarriage or infanticide. The dolls have also been used ritually as guardians of children and carriers of their souls. Today, some use the word kokeshi as a sexual innuendo due to the phallic shape. The history and imagery surrounding kokeshi dolls, whether fact or legend, is exciting, shocking, sad or mundane depending on which perspective you view them.
