Young American Collin O’Brien was excited to walk the very streets his grandfather walked as a child who grew up in Dublin, Ireland. Grafton Street was especially magical with the quaint shops and nearly endless selection of pubs. Collin’s camera was getting a workout as he snapped photos left and right. Then the brooding clouds above let loose with the rain that makes Ireland green. Since the morning started out with delightful sunshine, Collin didn’t think to bring a jacket, he’d left it in his hotel room. So he ducked into a small pub, sat himself at a window table and enjoyed a pint of Guinness as he watched the deluge. An hour later and the rain was still coming down but he wanted to get out and do some more exploring so he slipped into a small shop next to the pub to see if he could find a cheap jacket or an umbrella. He found the shop keeper and asked if he had any inexpensive rain jackets, something that he could pack easily in his carry-on.
The stout old clerk grinned and said, “American are ya? Don’t cha know it rains a bit here a bit now and den?”
“Yes I know, just looked like it was going to be a sunny day.” Collin replied, a little embarrassed that he was caught unprepared.
“I’ve got just the ting.” The clerk said as handed a Collin a small pouch. “Open it up and you’ll have yourself a jacket then.”
Collin snapped open the bag and unfolded a long rain coat. “Wow this is perfect.”
“Dat’s Swiss Army Surplus... dose Swiss are clever lads, yeah.” The clerk said as Collin paid him. He put on the jacket and made his way back out into the Dublin rain.
Here’s a super cool find-- a lightweight trent coat style rain jacket that folds up into its own carrying pouch. This jacket was originally Swiss Army issue back in the 1970’s and early 80’s. The jacket features a ventilated shoulder flap with mesh inside to wick away moisture; a button front; buttoned shoulder eapulets and two slots on the front so you can access your pant pockets. Besides looking great, this jacket is very compact and lightweight and folds back down into its own cleverly designed, attached 11" (28 cm)X 11" (28 cm) carrying case.Throw in your luggage, purse or keep one in the car for just in case.
Chest: 46” (117 cm)
Collar to bottom hem: 44” (112 cm)
Sleeve Inseam (armpit to cuff): 18.5” (47 cm)
These rain jackets are in very good vintage condition. They look like they’ve been in storage most of their lives with very light use. We found no rips, tears or holes. You’ll find that the fabric is wrinkled as they have been folded up for storage. If you like, you can hang them in a sunny window for a few days to lighten the wrinkles.
