This exquisite vintage china set is made by Meito (MAY-TOE) of Japan. It probably dates back to the 1940s, although items such as this are sometimes difficult to date.
The pattern is called The Berkshire, and it is delicately colored (green edge, yellow band, floral, gold trim) and quite elegant. All pieces have a stamp on the bottom that reads: Meito China -
Hand Painted - Made in Japan - the Berkshire.
All pieces are in excellent vintage condition... no cracks, chips or crazing.
A bit of company history:
- Founded in 1908 as Nagoya Seito Sho by former Noritake engineer Kotero Asukai.
- Production bore the backstamp "Meito," which means "fine sword."
- Meito was acquired by Sumitomo Steel Corp during WWII, and the company name was changed to Narumi Seito Narumi but continued to use the Meito backstamps.
- Meito expanded into the American market during the American Occupation, and the company had showrooms in NY, Chicago, Dallas and New Orleans.
In this set:
Oval Vegetable Bowl - 10"W from handle to handle
4 Coupe Soup Bowls - 7 3/8"
I've grouped these items together because although the large piece is considered a vegetable bowl, it would serve beautifully as a soup tureen. It could also be used for a garden salad or cut fruit salad, as the smaller bowls are a perfect size for either. Endless possibilities...
