According to Wikipedia, the French butter dish originated in France during the late 1800s, possibly in Brittany or Normandy where butter was produced or Vallauris, a town known for its pottery. The use of this two part crock allowed butter to be stored at room temperature without spoiling. Common names for the French butter dish include French butter keeper, beurrier Breton, beurrier Normand or a butter crock.

Through experience, I’ve found it’s easier to load the butter keeper if you allow the stick of butter to soften first, then pack the butter into the cup lid (see last photo). Add enough water to the base so that the open end rim of the cup lid is submerged in the water, creating an airtight seal with the lid. My butter keeper will hold between one half to a full stick of butter depending on the size of the cup.

The water should be changed every 2-3 days and the butter keeper should not be stored at room temperatures above 80 degrees F.

A French butter keeper is the perfect gift for anyone who enjoys butter on toast, buttered quesadillas, butter on pancakes, buttered grilled cheese sandwiches, butter on dinner rolls. No more waiting for the butter to soften enough to spread on whatever you wish to eat.

Microwave and dishwasher safe. All of my pieces are lead free.

Enjoy!
