The use of donkeys as guardians is an old-time way of protecting a flock. Some use both geldings and jennies as protectors. The donkey just naturally dislikes canines but they are very social animals. They seek out company and once they have bonded to a group of livestock they try to keep everything very peaceful and quiet. They do not intentionally patrol the pasture looking for intruders. They respond when there is a commotion somewhere in the field. The donkey will then put themselves between whatever is intruding and their group and will then protect. They will run at a dog or coyote, pick them up and throw them, kick, bite whatever they deem necessary to protect. Normally a flock knows that they are protected by the donkey and will go to them when they feel threatened. It is not uncommon to find the flock and donkey bedded down together for the night.
