The Pirir Reis map of 1528
Venice has undoubtedly inspired artists for many hundreds of years. It remains as much a mystery and an enigma as it must have been for those early navigators and cartographers who tried to capture it.
Piri Reis' nautical rendering of Venice in his 1528 map is among the most exquisite to date.
Reis was an Ottoman geographer and cartographer born between 1465 and 1470 and died in 1554 or 1555. He is primarily known today for his maps and charts collected in his Kitab-ı Bahriye (Book of Navigation), a book which contains detailed information on navigation as well as very accurate for its time charts describing the important ports and cities of the Mediterranean.
He gained fame as a cartographer when a small part of his first world map (prepared in 1513) was discovered in 1929 in Istanbul. His world map is the oldest known Turkish atlas showing the New World, and one of the oldest maps of America still in existence in the world.
The Flat World Globe measures 2 7/8 inches in diameter and 2 1/2 inches deep.
The Story of the Flat Worlds
Once it was a common held belief that the world was, indeed, flat. If murderous sea monsters and sirens weren't enough, it was thought that sailing too far out to sea, one would risk dropping right off the face of the Earth.
I rather loved that idea as a child. . . many a bed/bedroom sailing vessel found itself in high seas battling creatures of the deep in those days. Later in my life, upon staring out to sea from my coastal environment, I recalled the stories I read of early explorers.
Here is a small, whimsical interpretation of that old "The World is Flat" belief rendered in polymer clay. This piece is formed and hand textured then painted with acrylic and gold pigment paints to give it an "old world" styling. The small, vintage map is attached and lightly decoupaged across the flat surface of this "half globe". The piece comes with its own small "tripod" stand for you to display it on.
***NOTE!!!*** We can reproduce the Flat Worlds with a variety of ancient and modern maps. If you have an idea or a wish (someones birth country or ancestral origin, historic period, favorite city) let us know and we can customize a Flat World for you!
Until we can move all of the globes to this shop, the listings are still here:
