In my studio, I have an old cigar box full of embroidery floss from back in the 70s, when I was a teen. Over the years I've added to the box, but I can recognize the vintage floss; its colors are faded to muted hues. Some of it is even older, as this box was originally given to me by my step mother, full of her girlhood floss stash. I've used this old floss to embellish this embroidered heart brooch.
The three inch brooch is made of reclaimed wool that I felted in the washer. I've hand sewn two layers of wool together, and lightly stuffed the heart with locally sourced wool roving. The front has a delicate little flower, whose blossom is made of cream colored silk and embellished with a red glass bead in the center. I embroidered the stem, leaves, and some flying dandelion fluff, also with bead centers. On the back of the heart, I have securely attached a pin closure. Because this is made of wool through and through, and nasty little moths like to eat wool, I've added a couple drops of lavender essential oil to the stuffing. Treat your brooch as you do your other wool items, and store it in a sealed plastic bag when not in use.
This lovely brooch will look gorgeous pinned to your sweater, scarf, or shawl. You could also attach it to a purse. It will be a great addition to your jewelry wardrobe long after Valentine's Day!
