This is a bullroarer made from a simply fabulous piece of Holly wood. Bullroarers are whirled round on the end of a length of cord and as they twist through the air they create a sound quite unlike anything else; an atmospheric hum that seems to resonate with the very bones of Mother Earth and can be varied with the speed of the swing as well as the length of the cord. They are used to call the spirits of the ancestors or local guardians, or to keep away any malevolent entities. Although most commonly associated with the Australian aboriginal people, artifacts like this have been found connected to many primitive and shamanistic cultures throughout the world and are increasingly being used by modern witches and pagans of all kinds.
This particular bullroarer is large compared to my regular size, but once I saw the beauty of the wood I just couldn't bring myself to cut it smaller and discard any of the patterning. It's truly unique as this is the only piece of wood this size I managed to cut from the branch. I chose to use Holly for a bullroarer because it is such a good material for the consecration of sacred space. The wood shows some absolutely beautiful colours and grain patterns, and has a number of small knots. The main reason for the fantastic colours is that the branch was dead and had been weathered for some time. As you know, I never cut wood especally for crafting and only ever use timber that would have been cut down anyway. This branch was another casualty of the straw trailers stacked way too high so that they catch on overhanging trees. The bullroarer flies extremely well and is silky smooth to the touch. It comes with about five feet of waxed cotton cord attached with a knot that won't twist loose. I use waxed cotton cord because unlike most types of cord or string it is braided, not twisted. Twisted cord will unravel over time from the constant twisting of the wooden blade in the air, which has a weakening effect on the cord as well as looking unsightly.
As usual, I did all the work the traditional way by hand, with no help from power tools of any kind. Both the cord and the oiled finish are completely free of animal products and there are no metal parts.
I can custom make a bullroarer for you from any wood I have large enough and whatever size or shape you'd like, with runes or other symbols burnt into the wood. I can also add a button or toggle handle to assist with gripping the cord. The only criterion for bullroarers is that the piece of wood needs to be longer than it is wide and fairly thin. Just drop me a convo if you'd like one custom made to your own specifications.
Both the Holly tree and the wood are held to be sacred, so it’s a good choice for consecration. It has a strong association with fire, and signifies the virtues of balance and directness. It is closely linked with combat and is said to bring courage and protection whilst fighting for a just cause and also to ward off evil spirits. It is good for magic to do with material gain, and is said to enhance beauty. It can also be used in spells for physical revenge.
Size: Twelve and three eighths inches long, almost two and three quarter inches wide and about a quarter of an inch thick.
315mm x 69mm x 7mm.
It will come with a list of the magical properties of the wood, a picture and care instructions.
Please exercise common sense whilst using this bullroarer... if you bash it against people it will hurt, and if you bash it against things like walls, ceilings, furniture or trees then something's likely to get damaged. It is not a toy and should only be used by responsible adults.
