These medals were awarded for excellent service/work for the french government or country.
It reads in french on the back: "medal ministere du affaires sociale R. FRAEHRING 1974"
which means:
medal of the minister of social affairs.
On the front is the beautiful symbol of france and it says 'republique francaise' = french republique.

length of box:10cm (4 inches)
width of box: 5.5cm (2.1 inches)
The medal is in meium to good condition.It does have some scratches and marks.The box has slight wear.
