This antique mechanical Valentine card is made from heavy, embossed die cut card stock. It measures about 6 1/2” wide x 5 3/8” tall. As you rotate the yellow circle, the dog’s mouth opens and closes as his paws move toward his mouth. One paw is empty and the other holds a heart. There’s a small fold-out tab on the back for standing the card up to display.
The card has lots of nice details. The dog is holding a cane and is adorned with blue bows. There’s a realistic bee on the basket (probably symbolizing honey or sweetness), and the basket is so overflowing with hearts that one has fallen out into the grass.
This is an odd little scene, and the mechanical movement adds a whole other delightful dimension. I’ve shown photos of the card in various stages, but still photos really don’t do it justice - it’s really entertaining to watch the dog chomp down on his valentine treats.
The card is in very good condition, especially considering its age (around 100 years old, maybe a little older) and the fact that it has moving parts. There’s a small tear on the bottom edge, a light crease in the dog’s ear, and some minor edge and corner wear. The back is signed “Joe” in pencil. Otherwise, the condition is great. The colors are still vibrant, and the mechanism works perfectly.
