Title: Travellers Handbook to Paris
Author: Roy Elston
Publisher: Simpkin Marshall LTD (London)
Publication Year: 1937
Pages: 168 including adverts for Parisian shops
Size: 12 cm x 17.2 cm
Unusually for a book this old, this one has it’s original dustjacket. The dustjacket is orange, faded in places, with black printed text on the front, spine and back (the back is a list of other such handbooks and their prices). The dustjacket is frayed and torn at the corners and at the tops and bottoms of the spine but otherwise it is in good condition.
The boards of the book are dark read with dark gilt lettering on the spine and the front. Most of the pages are clean although there are a few creases from where the pages have been folded in the past and there is a small red stain on the first page. The title page is coming loose at the bottom, but the binding is secure and all pages appear to be present. There are 13 maps and plans of key things to see, they are listed in the contents and all are in the book.
The first page bears the dedication “P Matthews 1937” in ink, hopefully P Matthews enjoyed their time in Paris!
This book would make a nice vintage gift for a traveller, someone who is interested in Europe before the second world war, or just someone who loves old maps!
