"HUMBLE ROBE" is created in the form of a traditional robe of a western monk. Every year I explore a word in depth. Last year it was humility. This fiber art creation came out of that exploration. The back of the robe has the following Thomas Merton quote "written" with the handspun yarn:
“In humility is the greatest freedom. As long as you have to defend the imaginary self that you think is important, you lose your peace of heart. As soon as you compare that shadow with the shadows of other people, you lose all joy, because you have begun to trade in unrealities and there is no joy in things that do not exist.” Thomas Merton
On the hood and the sleeves is a repeating pattern of Dwennimmen; humility and strength a West African Adinkra Symbol. The front is the Adinkra Symbol Kintinkantan; arrogance and need for humility. The whole front edge is a repeat of the word "humble".
This listing includes the the twisted wire hanger I created for the piece. Total hanging length is 55 inches. It is 20 inches wide and 9 inches deep. The robe is 33 inches around and the sleeve are 17 inches long. This robe is wearable but really intended to hang.
I handspun this un-dyed wool from the fleece of an Icelandic Sheep named Nutmeg from Somerville, Maine. It is a natural heathery brown color. I purchased the fleece at a local fair, The Common Ground Fair, Unity Maine. With the handspun yarn I created this unique design using sewing threads in various shades of brown with my sewing machine. This technique creates a web like freeform design that is light weight but surprisingly strong.
The Humble Robe can be hand washed without agitation. Line dried and ironed on the wool setting.
