A timeless, unique piece.... with a wonderfully distinctive hand formed bird lid with a carefully selected charm of beads attached. A vessel you will want to display in your home. A great addition to your own art pottery collection or a gift for a friend.
The charm on this vessel is made from a small tile of bamboo. We have collaged one of our close up photos of beach stones on the bamboo and sealed it with a couple of coats of matte varnish. There are also beach stones that we collected from the shores of Lake Michigan.
This piece of art pottery is about 12.75 inches tall and about 5.25 inches wide. The depth is 3.5 inches.
Steve hand builds this vessel from slabs of clay. Sue hand forms the little bird on the lid. No molds were used.
After bisque firing, the body of the vessel was glazed with a turquoise crackle glaze. Steve makes this glaze.
The vessel is then placed in a specially built kiln and heated until the glaze has melted. Still glowing with intense heat, it is removed from the kiln. This thermal shock causes the glaze to crackle.
Then the vessel is placed into a container of sawdust. The sawdust ignites and produces a smoky atmosphere where carbon is absorbed into the unglazed clay and the crackled glaze.
Each piece has its own distinct crackle pattern and is unique in the way the carbon darkens the clay.
If you want to send this bird vessel as a gift we will wrap it in colorful tissue and tie a ribbon around it. We are also happy to include a personal message from you.
