Whimsy is good for you.
This little bird was made for rocking!
How about giving him a home? He makes a great, amusing little companion on your desk. He would also make a fun, unique gift. Many of our customers tell us that these rockers.....make them smile :o)
If you want to give this as a gift, we will wrap it in brightly colored tissue paper and tie a ribbon around it. We are also happy to enclose a message from you.
These sell really fast at our summer art fairs and we often have customers come back to add another bird or two to their flock. We also make fish and rabbits and rocking moons!
He is about 5 inches from beak to tail and is a little over 3 inches tall.
We cut out and assemble the bird from slabs of clay.
After bisque firing , we draw the design on the clay with wax. Then glazes are hand applied and the rocker bird is raku fired.
We place the rocker in a specially built raku kiln and heat it until the glaze has melted. Still glowing with intense heat, we remove it from the kiln. This thermal shock causes the glaze to crackle.
Then the rocker is placed into a container of sawdust. The sawdust ignites and produces a smoky atmosphere where carbon is absorbed into the unglazed clay and the crackled glaze.
Each piece has its own distinct crackle pattern and is unique in the way the carbon darkens the clay.
We personally design, handform, glaze and fire each one. We do not slip cast or use molds.
