A power pole transformer malfunctioned and started a ground fire that burned through a glorious grove of native nogal walnut trees. Several of the trees died as a result. Others were only partially burned. The landowner was cutting the trees down for firewood. We bought the trees to keep them from being burned. (Gotta sequester that carbon when we can!)
The history of the Bonito Creek, south of Lincoln New Mexico, has been widely documented as a gathering spot for Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Regulators of old west fame. Yup, he supposedly stopped to water his horse in this grove of walnut trees and probably caught a siesta.
Count the rings in this walnut tree slice to see how old the tree was back in Billy's days :) We have left a little evidence of the fire char on this warm brown centerpiece, just to remind you of its history.
