KandinskyInSpace is the first of four monoprints in the set 4Square, part of the album "CirclingTheSquare". It pushes into bolder colors and towards a more painterly, somewhat looser feel. That experiment is contrasted with the crisp geometry of the circles.
In the course of printing, pinning, contemplating, printing... a play of circles, background, foreground, layers and colors developed over the four related panels.
Those four panels fell neatly into two sets of pairs. One set has recently found the perfect setting in a loving home, the other two prints are now on view on Etsy and UGallery ('KandinskyInSpace's partner piece, 'SolarEclipse' - as seen in the last detail image - is available on www.ugallery.com/karin-bruckner)
As I was contemplating titles for the four pieces and the story they told, this one brought me back to a Kandinsky retrospective I saw a few years back at the Guggenheim Museum. On display were a few of his later works that had a perplexing and captivating sense of color, incorporating many different hues and shades of pink, juxtaposed with darker colors and greens. So I began to see this piece as an homage of sorts to one of my favorite artists. At the same time there is something spacey and interplanetary about the prints, circles roaming freely in the pictorial space like planets in a colorful universe.
And that is how Kandinsky met Space. Enjoy the flight.
If you are interested in seeing all four (KandinskyInSpace, SolarEclipse, TooCloseToTheSun and 'Pi'IsALie) together, they are displayed in my album 'CirclingTheSquare' on www.facebook.com/kbmatter
