This yarn reminded me of a small animal with brown and orange stripes, which led me to chipmunks. I started investigating the little mammals and found to my surprise that there are many species and many, many subspecies, each endemic to its small terrain. Here, in the Pacific Northwest, we have the Townshend chipmunk, a very small, light animal. In fact, we have a lot of Townshend animals: A T. mole, a T. thrush, and a T. vole. John Kirk Townshend was an early naturalist who crossed the Rocky Mountains and went down the Columbia River in the 1830s. But I digress. This yarn is beige, palest brown, and rusty brown, with one play being hand-painted BFL roving and the other a natural colored Louet wool roving.

This listing is for two 2-ply skeins, weighing 8.6 oz., spun at an average of 1250 ypp (yards per pound), a DK weight. These 685 yards wrap at approximately 12-14.

BFL is a “multipurpose” sheep breed dating back from the early 1900’s. The ewes produce “litters” of three or four lambs with long loins. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination. Fortunately, they also have a beautifully soft, long wool that is especially easy to spin, so they are raised to maturity for their lustrous fleeces.

See my Store Policy FAQs section for further knitting gauge suggestions for various yard weights and care instructions for different fibers.

My skeins are wound on a full 2-yard niddy-noddy. If you don’t have a large swift, let me know. Spun in a smoke-free, pet-friendly home.
