The wood meaures approximately 1 1/4" x 1 1/8" diameter, with a brown suede leather strap to tie it to a walking stick, backpack, around your neck, or belt loop. Small enough to fit into your pocket if you so desired.

When I was growing up I was very involved with the Boy Scouts. I loved everything about being a Scout. I can clearly to this day remember assembling my kit when working on my Wilderness Survival merit badge. Ranking right up at the top along with my flint and steel for fire building was a mini compass.

When I got older I loved to go hiking, backpacking, and camping in remote places. Now without giving away my age I will simply say that a handheld GPS was yet invented, not even close to being invented. So my pack always contained basic first aid, survival gear, a map of the area, and a trusty compass. With my compass and the knowledge I had acquired as a Boy Scout I could find my way out of any remote area on my map. It is a very comforting thought to know that you always know where you are when in the wilderness.

When making my tree branch mini compasses I use a high quality compass. I hand select the pieces of various tree branches for the strength, colors, shape, and grain patterns. No reason something like a compass can't be beautiful too right?

I hand work each wooden piece with the final step of drilling a hole that is the exact size of the compass assuring a tight fit. The wood is then treated with two coats of natural tung oil to perserve and protect the wood. Next I brush on a coat of waterproof epoxy onto the bottom of the compass as well as the inside of the recess. This makes for a solid connection to last for generations.

These make wonderful gifts for Scouts both young and old, boy or girl. Perfect for anyone who loves to hike, hunt, camp, or fish. Please contact me should you like to purchase multiple compasses. These are a thoughtful and useful gift for say your son's scout patrol.
