On the face of it, there was no one living at this House. From the end of the utterly quiet brick street, the tall Georgian terrace is smooth, composed, almost deathly in watery sunlight and cool shadows. In my memory, the house is a pale blue-grey, monochromatic and aloof. The windows would always appear dark and reflect you back as you knocked at a black front door that opened directly onto the pavement. Asleep and watchful, noiselessly mourning.
Gradually, "16" showed that my memory was faulty, or at least she showed me that all was not as it seemed. She separated, grew blacker and whiter, and tangled threads grew from her gown. The more you try to unravel them, the more "16" will knot, fray and eventually disappear.
I wanted "16" to be the kind of doll you longed for as a child - beautiful, glamorous, mysterious and old. She is big enough to hold.
"16" is entirely handstitched and painted. Her dress is embroidered muslin and silk, with a double layered skirt. Her limbs are jointed and she is capable of sitting unsupported.
