These charts were designed for use with gradated sets of six colors. The small circle (shown here) has a repeat of 10 rows (height) and 10 stitches (width), allowing the use of one color per row. The large circle chart (not shown here) has a repeat of 18 rows (height) and 18 stitches (width), allowing the use of two rows per color.
There are a lot of visual groupings that keep this design lively. The lines show circles that can be followed in ever-widening or ever-narrowing groupings. The gradations create horizontal stripes and apparent surface undulations. The dark centers of the circles create diagonal patterns. Whenever the eye tries to look at one grouping, another grouping calls attention, so the eye is kept on a lively look around a rather regimented design.
