This striking vintage abacus is made of wood, painted black and red, with wood beads and brass brackets on the corners and at the inner bar. This abacus is by made Hop Cheong Tai, Hong Kong. I believe it dates to the mid-1970s (a listing for a similar one by the same company is in the online catalog for the British Museum). The abacus has nine rows of beads. There are two paper labels on it (under the beads)--one in English for the Hong Kong company, and the other in Chinese.
The abacus is in very good condition. There's some discoloration of the brass around the nails, but I wouldn't change a thing.
