This adorable Gretel was made handmade by Pelham Puppets, a famous British toy company established in 1948.
Gretel, alongside her brother Hansel, was part of Pelham's Storybook Characters and SL range (SL standing for String Luxury puppets).
Like many of Pelham's female puppets, Gretel was produced in a number of different style outfits, although she generally has her hair tied in plaits and wears folk style clothing and clogs.
This particular Gretel looks as sweet as the candy she famously eats in the fairytale she stars in.
She has thick auburn tresses tied in two tidy plaits held together with ribbon and topped off with a plum and lemon headband.
She wears a Bavarian style dress of deep ruby red with a gingham apron and a bodice displaying flowers of the forest motifs.
Chunky green clogs - the same colour as her hair ribbons - protect her feet.
Her heart-shaped face has been very prettily painted with huge almond shaped eyes framed by ultra-long eyelashes, pinky-pert cheeks and claret-coloured lips just made for tasting sweet treats.
With her strings in tact and tangle free and her clothes practically pristine, this charming Gretel is in excellent vintage condition.
She comes with a Pelham box, which shows signs of damage and wear.
Her wooden string holder bears the 'Pelham Puppets Made in England' stamp.
The Fairytale Bit: The design of Pelham's Hansel and Gretel puppets was based on the puppets used in the stop-animated 1954 feature titled 'Hansel and Gretal: An Opera Fantasy' with music by Engelbert Humperdink. Watch the wonderful film here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asRBj-I49R4
