On a piece of yellow, much wrinkled paper was this note saying 'This pitcher was taken from cafe in Bremehaven Germany in Jan. 1920' It is signed by the writer, who was a Radio operator above the SS Sutherland.
Now, I'm not condoning what he did, but he has long since passed on, and passed this trinket to someone in his family. But what fun to think of him wrapping this up and tucking it inside his tunic to bring home to a sweetheart he hadn't seen in months, perhaps years!
On the bottom, it's engraved '1901 Resinger 15'. Above that is engraved 1/4 aL. A little research found that Resinger was the hometown of Germany's largest restaurant silver plate factory, who supplied most serving ware for German restaurants for much of the 1800's and into the 1920's. I feel sure this is some of their silverplated restaurant ware.
I am not well versed in the care of antique silver, so I am afraid to do much more cleaning than I have, so there is still tarnish on it, but it is such a wonderful little piece, and having the history of it's life makes it a real treasure! I think it would be wonderful, in a shadow box with the paper mounted behind it!
