Hand cut Covellite cabochon from old stock Montana rough.
Covellite is a rare mineral. An unusual form of massive Copper Sulphide, often streaked with Copper Iron Pyrite known as Chalcopyrite. It forms large masses of deep indigo blue crystals at times punctuated with the more golden displays of the pyrite. It polishes to a deep steely metallic blue that is out of this world. Think deep blue hematite. A slightly difficult mineral to cut as the wider and more defined sections of pyrite are not as stable as the mass of Covellite is and tend to chunk out and dislodge. it is for this reason much is stabilized with resin. This batch of Covellite is natural, I have not treated in any way, thus some pitting occurs. I have tried to photograph the cabochons to show the pits clearly. However in most cases they show to be greater disruptions to the eye than is actually the case. True also of the overall finish which in person is a very beautiful blue mirror shine all around. One of the hardest cabochon subjects I have ever photographed. If you know the mineral you will know these are exemplary cuts. Enjoy.

A little pyrite and quartz in a cave like depression only adds to this stones mystery. Beautiful streaking and deep deep color.
