I make these pitchers by first rolling out a large slab of clay, cutting the pitcher template, rolling a lace doily into the cut slab of clay and then folding and smoothing into the unique and sturdy shape seen above. The top and inside are glazed. The glaze surrounds the lace impressed portion which is stained with an iron oxide solution, bringing out the details of the lace and leaving the brown portion a mat earthy texture.
The lace on this pitcher is a very delicate antique collar whose natural curve works well with the upper curvature of the pitcher. As with all my work, these are food and dishwasher safe. When not being used for serving these pitchers make a beautiful vase for flowers.
