Christian Barthelmess (1854-1906) was a "shadow catcher", a group of photographers in the mid to late 1800s who shot photos of Native Americans in their natural environment. Primarily Southwestern American tribes.
Born in Klingenberg, Bavaria, Christian Barthelmess came to the United States in the 1870's. In 1876, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served directing bands and training musicians for the military. As an added responsibility, he was assigned the position of army photographer. Barthelmess retired from army service in 1903, but remained as a post photographer until his death in 1906.
