Story of this drawing: One of my friends asked me if I had ever done Chinese painting. This question inspired me to start paying attention to Chinese painting again. I used to love the Chinese painting’s poetic aesthetic, simplicity and abstraction. The empty space even plays a important part in the painting! When I looked at some Chinese paintings again, I couldn’t help to try it by myself. I started with some sketches from my trips of mid-southern China: the little bridge and gondola man, then mixed that with a village built along the mountain. When I finished this drawing, I realized where the aesthetic comes from. Lots of Chinese villages are just beautiful and poetic by themselves and those wonderful Chinese painters have found a great way to represent it!
This drawing definitely needs a long body dress to present it! I printed this drawing onto an elegant grey dress. The dress is made of two different fabrics: the front panel is knit wool and the back panel is soft pre-washed satin. Two different fabrics make an interesting contrast for this dress. I also hand stitched 8 shiny red sequins under the roofs as the Chinese lanterns. You can’t see any sequins on any Chinese painting though, but they look great on this dress!
