The farm pond had some tropical visitors that made their home on the nearby picket fence. These hand-sculpted butterflies remind me of the Blue morpho butterfly that lives in the tropical forests of Latin America. However, these little stoneware butterflies will live a lot longer than the Blue Morpho's fleeting 115 days.
Farm Pond Butterflies include a small and large butterfly in opalescent blue tipped in a light tan and rust and a large blue green with sage butterfly tipped in rust. The stoneware clay I used for these butterflies has a speckling of manganese in it, giving the opal butterflies a chocolate polka-dot design and toasted edge trim to the blue-green and sage butterfly.
The block is hand painted in layers of matte colors and sanded down to the base coat to give it a rustic, distressed finish. This block began with a base of phthalo blue, topped with raw umber and tan and then was finished with a top coat of light cream.
Farm Pond Butterfly block is very versatile; it can either hang as a wall piece or stand on its own as a table, counter, desk or bookshelf piece.
Farm Pond Butterfly block measures 3-3/4 inches wide, 3-7/8 inches tall and 1-1/2 inches deep. The overall size is roughly 4-3/4 inches wide, 4 inches tall and 3-1/4 inches deep.
