The hide used for this headdress came from tannery in Washington owned and operated by a friend. The deer is a HUGE Pacific Northwest mule deer featuring a fully-mounted head and 'blind' eyes made from opalite glass. These eyes are backed in highly-polished silver foil to reflect light back through them; they literally glow, much like a cats' eyes, in low light.
This was the first deer I ever mounted for taxidermy, and it is by no means perfect (he has a few slip spots on one side of the face which have been touched up with paint; the lips were not tucked very well; and his eyes are not perfectly formed), but it's still one of the most impressive headdresses I've created to date. Among my friends, he is even somewhat of a legend, and it's taken me a while to decide that it's time for us to part ways. But I have other projects I plan to pursue, and in order to accomplish them, I need to make a bit of room.
This headdresses is made using the whole hide of a very large deer. He's 3" too big on me, and I stand 5'6" tall. He is also rather heavy, so would not be a very good skin to dance in, but he still has a very strong energy around him.
The leather of this hide is supple and professionally treated so that it drapes effortlessly over the wearer's body. The head was rehydrated and molded over a hand-carved form to give it a more lifelike appearance. His ears stick up over the wearer's head and are slightly pricked forward in alertness and the lower jaw has two recycled leather strips attached so that you can tie it securely beneath your chin. Additional straps can be added at no extra cost.
Perfect for religious purposes, Burning Man, bonfire parties, Pow-Wows, Halloween, costume parties, re-enactors, Mountain Man, cosplayers, renaissance fairs, Roman battle reenactments, or anyone who wants to feel more in touch with their inner animal. It also looks lovely draped over an arm chair or thrown over the back of your favorite sofa. Could also be a fantastic wall-hanging, blanket, or rug for the cabin or log home.
