Antique Child's Rocker from the Late 1800's.
This children's rocker, built in the late 1800's, is a beautiful testament to childhood. How many generations of children have rocked their dolls in this chair, listened to stories or sat alongside the adults at the fireside?
This piece is in excellent condition. Built by hand, you can see the details of craftsmanship, even under the chipped paint. The seat is rush and has survived over 100 years of use. Only one small piece of the original caning is loose. Hand carved details with the slight variations of hand-craftsmanship adorn the stiles and legs. The stiles in the back of the chair, as well as the rails, are bentwood. The rockers have decorative knotches. There is no evidence of any nails having been used, even to repair it. Wooden pegs attach the rockers to the legs. When first built, it was one of the finer pieces of furniture in the home, not a farm chair.
This little piece is exceptionally solid, not rickety, and is as sturdy as the day it was built. The rockers are perfectly balanced.
Only two coats of paint have been used on it. The first, peeking through the blue, is a muted buttercream yellow. This yellow tone shows no signs of chipping and is possibly milk paint, true to the period.
Another coat of paint was added later. Indicators suggest that it is a water-based paint.
The chair stands 29" high x 16" wide x 25 " deep from the front to the back of the rockers. A small adult can sit in it comfortably.
A beautiful example of American craftsmanship.
A tribute to childhood.
