The phenomena in these exhausted tubes reveal to physical science a new world—a world where matter may exist in a fourth state, where the corpuscular theory of light may be true, and where light does not always move in straight lines, but where we can never enter, and with which we must be content to observe and experiment from the outside.
— Sir William Crookes
~~~ What a great gift this would make for any vintage, antique, Tesla, Edison, Crookes, Victorian, Steampunk enthusiast! ~~~
This lamp is a Crookes-Conrow Radiometer Lamp found only at VictorianMachines. Professor Conrow modified Sir Crookes' original 1873 concept by adding an attached light source, which automatically powers the internal "Light Mill" blades, causing them to slowly rotate, throwing light and shadow around the room.
Produced to Professor Conrow's exacting standards, this lamp features an improved 50,000 hour, triple-bulb lighting arrangement which originally operated from 14.6VDC Dry Cells. I have attached a small wall transformer to provide the current necessary by simply plugging the unit into a standard wall socket. However, a 2 foot length of the original golden, cloth-covered lamp cord is used as a lead-out to preserve the vintage look.
Professor Conrow had originally hoped to use this apparatus to prove his theory of how Sir Crookes Radiometer worked, but ended up just as confused as Crookes himself. In fact, even today, the exact mechanism by which the Radiometer operates is still the subject of much debate. If you are interested, please look at the Crookes' Radiometer wiki entry here:
This lamp is the perfect desk or cabinet light in your office or room and a guaranteed conversation-starter. If you are a serious Steampunk collector, THIS is the right lamp for you! The Crookes Conrow Radiometer Lamp is approximately 5" in diameter and about 11" high. Weight is about 2 lbs.
PLEASE NOTE: the Dog Statue and Standing Steampunk Clockwork Mechanism shown in photo 1 are NOT included in this listing. Please see my other listings for additional items and accessories.
