Antique ambrotype from the 1850s in a full leather embossed case with bright copper metal frame and red velvet inside. The subject is a young woman, possibly a teenager or a young mother to be (as has been speculated by the shape of her coat). She sits in a formal, slightly turned position, her hands clasped in her lap. With her dark hair, center part, and slightly grave expression she's a serious, enigmatic young beauty.

This is a sixth plate ambrotype: 3.25" x 2.75" inside.
The case is 4" x 3.25" outside.

In very good condition with a couple of notes: there is a small blotch on the lower left of the image (see the last photo), and some very minor freckling at the edge. The face and figure are beautifully clear. The leather case has some wear on the surface and has split so there are two pieces: the top, and the case, as shown. The latches are still there. The copper frame and red velvet are in beautiful shape.
