A number of techniques were used while making this painting including painting/fusing/layering beeswax, resin and pigment, stamping and carving into the wax and filling ridges with oil stick. The "aged" look of this piece is intentional.
Encaustic is the medium which consists of molten beeswax, resin, and pigments that are fused after application into a continuous layer and fixed to a support (wood) with heat. This achieves a lustrous enamel appearance.
Encaustic paintings do not need to be protected by glass. If your painting looks dull, or gets dirty it can be wiped clean with a soft cloth dampened with water and buffed to a high shine.
