A mermaid is a mythical aquatic sea creature with the head and torso of a woman and the tail of a fish. Mermaid is a compound of the old english words “mere”, meaning sea and “maid”, meaning woman. In heraldry, the mermaid symbolizes eloquence.
The mermaids tear is a gorgeous little piece of two-tone ocean blue seaglass... mostly blue with a bit of clear toward the back... we often call it "end of the day" seaglass, as it's the sweeps from cleaning up at the glass blowing studio. I've tried to show this in the 3rd and 4th photographs. Seaglass is broken glass that makes its way to the ocean and after being tossed and tumbled by the surf it becomes smooth and jewel like!
The tiny little mermaid charm measures approximately 3/8” in width, so it’s really small and delicate! I've fashioned this charm by hand stamping a portion of a larger antique heraldic seal in fine silver and then oxidized it to highlight the details.
The little blue seaglass nugget also measures approximately 3/8" in width, and combined, this charm measures just over 1" in length and it's threaded onto a delicate 16” or 18" sterling silver cable chain with a spring ring clasp.
"I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each." ~ T. S. Eliot (1888 - 1965)
