The board is made of 64 individually cut squares of hardwood. Half the squares are walnut and half birch. All four sides of each square were beveled before attaching them on the base board. This adds an elegant touch to the board. The board is framed in walnut with an inlay around the center of oak. The box itself is made of walnut with a decorative design at each corner. The bottom is similar to the top, without the checker squares. The box has a drawer which pulls out to hold the playing pieces. The drawer will pull out in either direction; so that, each player can easily reach his/her playing pieces. Each side has a ceramic knob as a drawer pull and a friction catch to hold the drawer in place. Individual partitions in the drawer are designed to hold each chessman separately. The bottom of the drawer is lined with green felt to cushion the playing pieces. The box is finished in a clear satin polyurethane finish for durability and beauty. It measures 19 1/4" x 19 1/8" and 3 5/8" tall.
The checkers were purchased unfinished and finished to match the hardwoods. The chessmen were cut out of blocks of maple and walnut on a bandsaw, then hand sanded and finished in clear polyurethane. Each piece has a square of felt on the bottom. The chess board and playing pieces weigh 13.4 lbs., resulting in the high cost of shipping. Shipping estimates are to send it parcel post. If you need priority mail, contact me before buying, with your location, and I will refigure postage. You are, also, welcome to pick up anything we sell, if you are in the north Alabama area. If you live close enough to me that I don't need all the shipping estimate, I will refund any not used.
Note that hardwoods come in shades from light to dark, depending on which part of the tree was cut for the lumber. If you've read our profile, you know that most of our wood comes from the discard pile of a small factory near here. If we had to pay full price for our hardwoods, we would have to double or triple our prices. James uses only the best parts of the wood, but there may be small imperfections. We think these just add character to the piece.
This checker board box is fine craftmanship and will be an heirloom in your family for many years to come. It would make a perfect gift for a family that has game night with the kids or someone who plays chess or checkers obsessively. If you don't want to spend that much money, we have other checker games, as well as, Chinese Checkers and Aggravation at Hobbymakers' shop. He also, has jewelry holders and bookends. I have stained glass night lights, candle holders and picture frames, and our son has film photography. I've begun adding some vintage handmade items. Thank you for stopping to visit with us, and liking our handiwork. Please visit again real soon. I add new items to both our shops often.
