Blue Stars and Moons Sgraffito
Sgraffito comes from the Italian word "graffiare" meaning "to scratch." This technique is extremely time consuming and delicate, but the results are beautiful and ununsual. For this yarn bowl, I coated the surface with a clay slip tinted with black mason stain. Before bisque firing I carved the star, moon, and spiral design as a freeform design by hand. Since my last piece used a clear glaze, I tried something different this time - blue celadon over the mason stain. The results were unusual but beautiful. The clear glaze gave a sparkling contrast, while the blue celadon glaze lends a hazy, cloudy feeling to the stars and moons. It's neat and I think I will continue to experiment with this contrast.
The bowl is heavy for its size, giving it stability while you're working on your most important projects. One J-hook yarn guide is handshaped in the face of the bowl. This bowl was handthrown using Cone 6 stoneware and glazed with a food safe glaze (though you probably won't be eating out of it). Please handwash if necessary. Remember that these are pieces of art and not production pottery - no two will be exactly the same but each will have its own unique story to tell.
Size: ~5,5" by 2" (give or take)
