Part of the print album 'PlayMat'
I recently happened upon a woven vinyl placemat that asked to be deconstructed and put through the printing press. It came in handy for an album I was working on in early 2012, later to be aptly named PlayMat.
While I was designing, inking and adding hand cut paper templates for another piece - mainly the figurines in the center - I ended up with another ghost print on the acrylic plate that had a narrative lurking in there somewhere.
I began to play with it.
I carved, scratched and wiped in the rather somber graphite center and knew it needed a colorful frame. As I was adding color by color on the perimeter, there was a piece of placemat on the table winking at me yet again. Contemplating the intermediate stage on the studio wall, the piece began to remind me of an old black and white TV set - it just needed a stand. That's where the piece of placemat found it's supporting role.
In the back of my mind I heard the kids from way back when : "What's on TV??!"
What are you watching tonite?
Art for your wall is what you can ponder, when there is nothing on TV :)
