Your wall plaque will be cast from a mold I made of my original plaster carving. It is about 6" x 8" and weighs three pounds. I use a combination of mineral oxide pigments added to C-144 masonry sand and blends of white and gray portland cements, and then hand cast the piece in my home studio. Once cured, I process Marvelous Mushrooms with Interference Gold, iridescent copper and bronze metallic highlights over a green to red transition (finish A C 11 7 6 27). A metal hook is embedded in the back, and it can be hung indoors or out. The mineral oxide and metallic pigments are 100% permanent and lightfast. The piece is further protected by a UV barrier coating.
I learned my techniques for intricate yet durable stone sculptures working in architectural precast concrete construction. Precast, or cast stone, is used widely in the United States to simulate natural cut stone. A variety of cements, manufactured or natural sands, carefully selected crushed stone or well graded natural gravels and mineral coloring pigments help achieve the desired color and appearance while maintaining physical properties which exceed most natural cut building stones.
