I have been making these wooden table numbers and initials going on the third year now! They are all handmade on a scroll saw and are a true 1" wide so they stand alone without a base. I use Poplar wood which is a light wood with little grain. It stains beautifully or can be spray painted with the color of your choice. I usually don't paint/stain them because of time constraints and I believe it's easier to find somebody to stain/paint them than it is to find somebody to cut them, plus it keeps the costs down.
I also make initials with the same size wood that would make a great gift for the new home of the newlyweds. The numbers could also be used for that special date and can be displayed as a memory of that beautiful day (not to mention a reminder for Mr. "forgetful") I have made lower case initials, and the words "I Do" whichever you prefer.
