This is a wonderful tome. Originally written in 1947, it is 847 pages full of mid-century recipes, homemaker guides, and dietary information. It displays the author's extensive knowledge of food and the science of kitchen homemaking. It is full of illustrations (both color and black and white), charts, and tables (from food buying guides to outlines for planning adequate diets for children). Written by beloved home economist Meta Given, this book would make a great housewarming gift for a new cook.
"Building a cook book is much like building a house in that both must be large, functional and modern enough to serve one's needs for practical and pleasant ways of living." - Meta Given, 1947
This book is in fantastic condition. The binding is tight and endpaper photographs are bright and intact. There are a couple food stains on the Table of Contents, but those were the only ones I saw. Although I do not have the second volume, there is a wealth of information in this volume alone. Measures 8 1/4" x 5 3/4" x 2".
As always, let me know if you would like to see more photos.
