'Jade Garden' is a bit of a chameleon. In low light it resembles an oil spot (seriously) or appears to be solid dark jade - taking on an opaque, mysterious appearance. In the above photos, both the float and photographer were mesmerized chasing beams of sunlight, never thinking to chance a photo in the dark! What a fascinating piece of antique glass, that it can light up like an emerald planet (photos #2 and #4) or go sullen, disappearing into the garden as an ancient mysterious jade object.

Jade Garden measures 3-1/2" diameter or 10-1/2" circumference. If displayed in the garden, it's sure to disappear, becoming a talisman for garden faeries and invisible folks! If displayed on sand or in a desert garden, it will light up like an emerald fortune teller's globe.

This lovely 3-piece molded Japanese or Korean collectible has tales to tell. If quiet, you can almost hear it whisper......perhaps it's the many decades of heavy winds and harsh sand-blasting intermingled with legends of the fishers, their families, their lives and villages. These stories have been recorded in the glass as a sort of 'sea scroll' - within the lovely 'frosting' and pitting of the glass from heavy sand-blasting.

This is a 2nd generation (Post-WW II) Korean or Japanese 3-piece molded glass fishing float. The seal 'button' on this three-piece float shows the typical 'umbilical' type surround indentation near the outermost edge of the seal. The seals are mostly uniform and nicely crafted in the 2nd generation of 3-pc molded floats. This one has survived hard work and decades of service in rough seas. The outer surround edge shows one tiny spot of grazing or slight nick to the edge. Fortunately, it survived better than many as the glass seals, as they are exposed to the harshness and challenges of working at sea over many decades.

You may study the seal in photo #4 and see how beautifully crafted it is. This seal button is actually 'textured' by a sealing iron. WOW! Don't see this very often. It has been said that the better Japanese glass blowers or master blowers used to 'texture' their seals. This one is like a beautiful label of sorts on the old artifact.

Each side of the southern hemisphere of Jade Garden shows a lovely, clear mark in the form of 'III'. It can be viewed especially in photo #3. These particular marks, often called 'hash' marks, in the form of simple Roman numerals such as I, II, III, IV, were used primarily as a means of matching the lower two halves in the process of production. Other more obscure marks were occasionally used. The 3-piece molded floats will always be a collector's favorite due to the amazing craftsmanship and care that went into hand-whittling the wooden molds into which the glass was poured. The construction is exquisite when you think they were made for work at sea!

Thank you for helping to care for vintage fishing floats which are rapidly being replaced with plastic or synthetic floats.

SHIPPING: Happy to offer Priority shipping for this float. It will be boxed with extra insulation for protection while in transit. The cost is $9.50. This includes your tracking number and insurance. It will be packed with absolute care. *** Please allow 1 to 3 days to ship and 2 to 3 days for the carrier. You should receive it in a week or less. If you need it quicker, tell me and I’ll ship it fast! ***

COMBINED SHIPPING: Yes - I will combine! Floats of generally similar size & weight can be combined so you save on shipping. These decisions are made at the actual time of packing, using my best judgment to keep items safe from damage in transit, protecting them maximally. Best option is to pay the shipping on each item up front. A shipping refund will be issued promptly via Paypal when your parcels are complete. My customers will confirm I am happy to do this. If this doesn’t work for you, convo for a ‘guesstimate’ on combined shipping of items.

CANADA: USPS has omitted insurance from the economy (1st Class International) shipping category. Priority International is the next best available method yet not cost effective in my opinion, unless purchasing two or three items & combining shipping. Please convo for a quote if interested. My sincere apologies!

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR TIME AND INTEREST. HOPE YOU RE-VISIT lightinawormhole.
