This handmade shabby cottage chic mini baby rag quilt features exquisite embroidered and appliqued hearts. I started with a beautiful collection of pink and cream 100% cotton floral designer fabrics. I pieced them together in the crazy quilt style and machine embroidered each seam. I used several different embroidery stitches and threads in shades of pink and white. Each heart is a little different, making this a really lovely heirloom mini quilt. After I finished the embroidery, I turned the edges of each heart under and then appliqued with a machine blanket stitch, using a pretty pink variegated cotton thread, on a cream tonal scroll printed fabric. The hearts are not fused, so they have the soft hand of traditional style applique. The alternate blocks are a pink toile print, from the Mary Rose collection by Robert Kaufman Fabrics, and are quilted with a heart. The back is a soft pink cotton flannel, and each square has a layer of white cotton flannel inside. The edge was finished in a wave stitch, also using the variegated pink thread. The seams are exposed and clipped for the cozy rag quilt look. I used extra wide seams for an especially cozy look.
The quilt measures approximately 18" x 18". This small size is perfect for a security blanket and also works well for a doll quilt.
Easy care -- machine wash cold, gentle cycle, and machine dry. I have washed once to start the ragging effect. Every time you wash this quilt it gets softer and cuddlier!
